ShanivarTeli – The Bene Israel Community by Leora Pezarkar
The Bene Israel community of Western India is one of the smallest Jewish diapsoras in the world. They are believed to be the descendants of shipwrecked Jews who sought shelter on the Konkan coast just south of Mumbai over 2000 years ago, and settled in the villages of the coast, making them their home. Though they assimilated into the larger local culture, taking on the occupation of oil-pressing and adopting the Marathi language and customs, they still continued to hold on to a few Jewish practices such as observing the Sabbath on a Saturday.

On our Online Talk ShanivarTeli, researcher and heritage professional Leora Pezarkar explores their history, some of their cultural practices and the unique identity that they created for themselves.

About the speaker:
Leora Pezarkar has a BA in History from Mumbai University and a Masters in Heritage Management from Ahmedabad University. She has presented papers on various aspects of heritage including museums, community identity in case of Bene Israel community and participatory approaches with context to heritage identification and documentation at international conferences.
