About Speaker Tannistha Samanta (PhD, University of Maryland, College Park) is a faculty member with the Humanities & Social Sciences department at IITGN. Samanta draws from the intersecting disciplines of sociology, gerontology and public health to examine the sociological question of inequality adopting a range of methodological tools and praxis. Her research has been published in top gerontology and population studies journals including Asian Population Studies (Taylor & Francis), The Journals of Gerontology(Oxford), Ageing International (Springer), Contributions to Indian Sociology (SAGE). She has also been the editor of an anthology of scholarly writings addressing the “data rich, theory poor” dimension of gerontology in Cross-cultural and Cross-disciplinary Perspectives in Social Gerontology (Springer Nature, 2017). Her research has been supported by grants received from the United Nations Population Fund, the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), University of California, San Diego, Population Foundation of India and Government of Gujarat. Samanta adopts interdisciplinary approaches both in research and pedagogy and teaches a range of courses from sociology to demography and medical anthropology at IITGN. Source: Facebook.
