Convergence: A Panorama of Photography’s French Connections in India

Explore India’s diverse photographic history, 195 years after the invention of the medium! Presenting extraordinary French itinerant photographers, ‘Convergence: A Panorama of Photography’s French Connections in India’ has been organised as part of the festival, Bonjour India 2022. As a unique experience in public space/s, we present 19th and 20th century images drawn from prominent museums and archives across France.

The show presents a range of lens-based works by early practitioners, such as Louis-Théophile Marie Rousselet in Central India from the mid-19th century, to Bernard Pierre Wolff from the 1970s. To commemorate 75 years of Independence, the core of the exhibition features the prolific Marc Riboud, and his dynamic coverage from the mid-1950s. Exploring new, coinciding timelines in the visual history of the subcontinent, the exhibition signposts pioneering Indian photographers from the same period.
