Ahmedabad, often known as the ‘Manchester of India’, is home to a number of textile crafts. One such craft is the old Kalamkari tradition known as Mata ni Pachedi, a sacred cloth worshipped by the Devipujak communities of Gujarat and Rajasthan. Literally translated as ‘behind the Mother Goddess’, this 300-year-old craft reflects the community’s devotion towards various forms of the Mother Goddess. In a small locality in Vasna, Ahmedabad, artisans belonging to the Chitara family create these paintings using methods that have been passed down for 200 years.

During this walk, we will visit this community of painters, hand-printers and dyers, all of whom are masters of their craft. Through a live demonstration, we will actively engage with the artisans and learn about the community.
