2020-01-19 19:00:00 2020-01-19 20:30:00 Asia/Kolkata Mohan No Masalo

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, changed the history of a nation as diverse as India and single-handedly paved the way for an entire nation to find its unique identity. Known as the Mahatma (The great soul), he appeared to be a man of conviction and perseverance. He became a leader, a father to a nation and to an extent the identity of India. It was his belief on his subjects and philosophies, which made him the man he was, but we must not forget that he too was a young man before he achieved his accolades. Over the years we have forgotten the scared and innocent little Mohandas lost in the enormous shadow of the Mahatma.
Mohan’s Masala brings to life this lost shadow of Mohandas, through whom we discover that a lot of the Mahatmas’ lessons were taught by these lost memories of an extraordinary life. Thus the title ‘Mohan’s Masala’ as many masalas (spices) make a recipe, here the recipe being the Mahatma and Mohania- as he was lovingly called by his relatives- being the vital ingredient.
Watch this Mohania take you through his journey in our era and his own. Let us understand what makes an ordinary soul into a spirit that is an inspiration to the entire world.
Mohandas will tell you about his childhood and his experiences that shaped his future. The skills that he picked up on the way; which made him the benevolent leader that he was. He will teach you to smell your own masalas through the example of his own life spanning from his birth in Porbandar to his life’s tipping point in South Africa.
This minimalistic theatre production brings to life the untold part of a life story so often told, making it into an experience to be cherished.

Hanuman ji and Maya

Bringing the divine story of Hanuman Ji & Maya to life through art.

I grew up in Mumbai city, a busy bustling city in India within a large united family. My childhood memories contain rituals, mythological stories, exotic flowers and intricate temple carvings. Waterfalls and mountain picnics took me on a fantasy adventure. Graduating from Sir JJ Institute of Arts definitely was a great milestone for me but my base took shape much earlier in life where I went to mountain sketch, illustrated temple carvings, sketched life forms in zoos, marketplace etc. I loved using different materials to experiment like wire, cloth, wood, clay, buttons and made everything from animal houses to backpacks to it all.

Through my art I want to talk about forgotten stories and mysteries that awaken our introspection. I want the audience to be mindful about Maya – the attachment we hold and the grip we are woven into. I want to experiment with diverse materials in the near future but keep my unique projection of the world alive – a world driven by Maya. The purpose of creating art is to talk about things greater than human understanding, to leave behind a message far greater than us. Art should lift your spirits and create an insatiable thirst to relive stories untold and how each story adds to another and how our stories too are linked to them in ways unknown.

In my ‘Hanumanji and Maya’ series I bring out forgotten stories, mythology that we wonder on with how and why. I have tried to make the imagination of these stories visually interesting with an Indian yet modern touch. My art still holds an old world charm that works like a Time Machine taking you to the past yet reminding you of your roots in the here and now.
