Missing Theatre??? Enjoy India’s best theatre experience from the comfort of your home!

At a time when many theatre fans around India aren’t able to visit Theatre Live at venues or local theatres, we’re excited to bring you Theatre at Home.

“Jab we separated” is a play which depicts the mindset of modern-day couples whose lives are woven in the fragile fabric of mistrust. Written by Rakesh Bedi, it’s primarily an emotional saga but has enough comedy to keep the audience in splits.  The narrative tells us that when confronted with infidelity or regular naggings of each other, the spouses nowadays resort to the only shortcut they have at hand and that is divorce. The reason being, financial and emotional independence has made them myopic and at the same time daring. They feel that now separating is not the end of the world and life will go on somehow.  Sadly no one wants to give a second chance also, except the court. This play is primarily the story of those six months which are given by court before you finally divorce.

Sanjay Sahni and Priya (Maheshwari) Sahni are living in a flat in Mumbai and they have filed for a divorce. The reason being Priya feels her husband is cheating on her, while Sanjay feels Priya does not give him enough space and nags too much. Such feelings drive them to bifurcate their flat into two parts. The court has given them a time frame of six months to reconcile if possible. But sadly in such a scenario, the couples desperately wait for these six months to get over and then subsequently get over with each other, rather than finding solutions for a harmonious life. Because of the nuclear family situation, there is no peer pressure also nowadays and hence there is no answerability to anyone. They also have an adolescent daughter, Megha, who is being tossed like a football between the two of them. And because of the precarious situation between her parents, Megha has learned to take emotional and financial advantage of both of them, though in the process she fails in her studies.

The play raises a very potent question- “is divorce the only answer?”

“Jab we separated” also tries to peep into the solitary life of senior citizens like Priya’s immediate neighbor, Monty Mitha, who is constantly seeking company as he has no one to talk to. He begs people for time and attention but in the process becomes irritating to the core. Monty Mitha surely becomes an eyesore for Sanjay. His interspersed appearances create great comical interludes. The play takes the audiences through a rollercoaster of emotions. It makes you laugh a lot and creates a wet eye at times.

Shweta Tiwari (as Priya), Rahul Bachar (as Sanjay) and Rakesh Bedi (as Monty Mitha) have got under the skin of their characters and give remarkable performances. Written and directed by one of the most active film t.V. & theatre personalities Rakesh Bedi, “jab we separated” raises pertinent questions and coaxes viewers for answers. A must see for sure.

Same Same But Different

Jahnvi Shrimankar, Kailash Waghmare: She grew up in a large joint family in South Mumbai. He in a family of marginal farmers in Maharashtra’s Jalna district. Her grandmother introduced her to the nuances of Dadra and Dhrupad through the Haveli Sangeet. He taught himself to sing perched on a Neem tree while grazing cattle in the vast open grounds outside his village. From childhood, she was rigorously groomed to be a singer with no room for distractions. His musical influences were diverse; the courtyard outside his home was an open stage for every passing itinerant performer. She found success as a commercial singer but is still looking for her artistic “voice”; he found success as an actor but the music remains his source of creative inspiration.

Two talented performers from different backgrounds, and different life experiences, facing different artistic and social challenges, yet bound together by their love for music, come together to share their life stories with searing honesty, humour and emotion. In telling their stories, they share music from different traditions, such as folk, classical, popular cinema, political, as they sing live, accompanied by a highly skilled band. Same Same but Different is a treat for the mind and the heart!
