While the lockdown has ignited various trends on social media, one that has received a major global following is #DalgonaCoffee. With thousands of posts on its name, here’s all you need to know about the Dalgona Coffee wave.

I first came across the Dalgona Coffee wave when a friend of mine uploaded a story on Instagram, flaunting a beautiful cup of coffee; a glass full of milk topped with a fluffy and creamy layer of whipped coffee. This reminded me of those childhood days when me and my sister used to experiment different ways to make our coffee drinking experience a little more exciting. And then, one day, my aunt introduced us to this incredible technique of whisking coffee, sugar and water which resulted in a pillow-y concoction, resembling to a home-made cappuccino. A lot like the Dalgona Coffee.

So, I clicked on to the hashtag and tagged on the story, and what I found was astounding! Apparently, within just two weeks, around 96 thousand posts have been uploaded on Instagram, with people showcasing their home-made Dalgona coffees. And not just on Instagram, this spurring trend can be observed on all platforms, from Twitter and Facebook to its originator, TikTok where it has crossed 90 million views!

How to make Dalgona Coffee ?

While this photogenic drink might seem like a professional artwork, it is incredibly easy to make. All you need to do is take 2 tablespoons of instant coffee, mix with sugar and water and persistently whisk it until you get stiff peaks. Is Dalgona Coffee a new recipe ?

Now, as to the origin of this drink, the debate has not been settled yet. While some believe that it was made popular by a South Korean actor who was served this drink on his visit to Macau, others believe that it is just a fancier version of Phenti Coffee (beaten coffee) which Indians and Pakistanis have been drinking for years.

Nevertheless, this fledgling new trend has given people and coffee connoisseurs all across the world an interesting project to invest their time during the quarantine. The graph of this trend seems far from flattening and we ain’t complaining.
