2017-10-27 11:00:00 2017-10-29 19:00:00 Asia/Kolkata Figuring Archives “Figuring Archives—artistic projects combining archival research, material evidence, and architectural preservation practice.” The exhibition by Sonal Mithal brings together the following projects that she has been developing over a period of past two years: Tension and Resistance: mixed media representing tension and resistance in the almost fast-becoming-redundant jute industry at Howrah. This was curated by Meteor International and was exhibited at Malmo, Sweden and Howrah. Canvas Palimpsests I: acrylic on canvas representing archival research on the public life, social, and political events over a period of past 300 years at Hazratganj—a street in Lucknow. Canvas Palimpsests II: acrylic on canvas representing archival research on the maritime history, architectural history, and trade history of Surat and Surat Castle over a period of past 600 years. Layered Constructions of a Castle: acrylic on canvas representing the identifiable historical construction layers revealed as material evidence during the architectural restoration of Surat Castle. Landscape Inquiry: acrylic on canvas using techniques of layering and erasures to represent the elemental qualities of growth, decay, renewal, and recovery as textures. Some selected works from this series have been exhibited at Urbana-Champaign, USA.
