“If you only read the books that everyone else is reading, you can only think what everyone else is thinking.

” This is what the Japanese author Haruki Murakami writes in the book Norwegian Wood.

The book is like reading a personal diary, written from the point of view of an older man looking back over his life at university. It’s a deeply reflective coming-of-age story that sees Toru Watanabe try to understand his relationship with the girlfriend (Naoko) of his best friend (Kisuki) years after he committed suicide. No matter where you are in life, from which country you belong to the book is bound to form a strong impression upon you. The theme of love, loss, and sex are sure to stir up a storm inside you.

This is not going to be a ‘talk’ but a discussion where we read anecdotes from the book and share our own experiences around it. Apart from it, the session will also have:

• Narration of the story (For all those who couldn’t manage to read the book, I understand you were busy!)
• Why is the title ‘Norwegian Wood’?
• Insights about the author and what makes him famous across the globe
• Writing style of the author
• What makes the Japanese story so relatable?
• Do you agree or disagree with the author’s point of view?
• Which is the least favourite part of the book?

Let’s come together to dive deep inside the world of this Japanese man Toru Watanabe and see how similar or how different his life is from ours.
