Tanashah is a dance-theatre piece devised and performed by Navtej Johar. It is based upon the jail diaries of Bhagat Singh, mainly his essay Why I am an Atheist, in which he talks of his journey from being a believer to becoming a non-believer. He talks of his devout grandfather, his misgivings as a young man, his questions, his gradual process of becoming a revolutionary, and also his fascination with the idea of “spiritual-atheism”.

It also includes his love for poetry, particularly his love for Waris Shah’s Heer (that recounts the love story of Heer and Ranjha).

Along with this, Navtej also touches upon his own journey of being a Sikh Bharatanatyam dancer, the impact of the Southern landscape on his sensibilities as well as his love for Carnatic music, particularly the padam.
