However, the next journey was committed and he had no option but to go. This time he did not want to leave his pregnant wife, Kabi, behind who was unaware about his illness. There was a strong belief in the sailor community that wouldn’t allow women on a ship as a passenger or a sailor-Mithu, being aware of this belief, decides to smuggle Kabi onto the ship and encourages her to join him as a sailor – as a young man named-Tejo. Mithu carefully hides this fact from the rest of the sailors. Kabi, who was a Kharva (sailor community) daughter and had been a teacher, had learned the craft of sailing, could read maps and understood weather changes, began the journey as Tejo with Mithu, her husband and owner of Rampasa. The story takes a turn when in the middle of the journey on the high sea, a series of unexpected incidents takes place: Mithu dies and the 7 Kharva men – the sailors realized the presence of a woman –Kabi, the dead owner’s wife – on the ship. They feel cheated and Bhoodo, an aggressive sailor, throws her over the ship into the deep sea. By a quirk of fate, Kabi does not die, climbs over back onto the ship and tries to establish her ownership of Rampasa and her leadership as the captain. Here the play raises questions: 1: What stands the sailors will take now? Will they allow Kabi, a woman, to be their leader? Can Kabi become the first Lady Captain of a ship? How? 2: Will there be a transformation in the sailors’ beliefs and mindset about women?
