2018-04-07 20:00:00 2018-04-07 22:30:00 Asia/Kolkata New Tides | Solo and Duo Music for Guitar

A concert of contemporary and accessible music, presented by Guitarists Mircea Gogoncea (Germany) and Aditya Gandhi (India).

Classical music has a misplaced perception. Much like a delicate antique in a museum, it is often perceived as old and stagnant – reflective of a culture and time long past. This perception of preservation rather than innovation is well justified, with so many performances featuring the same handful of composers and styles from centuries past.
But in reality it is a very fast moving ship. Since the turn of the 20th century, classical music in its purest form hasn’t existed, incorporating all forms of cultures and styles into its language – from Jazz, popular music, Folk music and many more. A whole generation of composers concerned with making art music more accessible and relevant have been transforming the field; composing music that has at least one foot in idioms completely novel to classical music.
Does the idea of Beatles combined with Japanese music sound intriguing? How about a merging of Balkan and African music? This recital is a brief but wide glimpse into this new direction of music – where old idioms are transformed into contemporary images reflective of our lives today. This project will feature solo and duo works from Cuba, Scotland, Japan, France, Paraguay to name a few; presenting stories, dances, and some unusual expressions one may not expect in music.
With a program steeped in humor and lightness, and a bold experimentation of flavors, this concert is not just an opportunity to hear new music by pioneering composers of our time, but rather to experience the limits of what music as a medium of expression can convey…

Disclaimer: For those slightly afraid of all things ‘modern’ and ‘contemporary’ – don’t be! This program is created to be very accessible and will be accompanied by informative (and mostly humorous) commentary.

The Game of Moves – A Hindi Play

Duration:- 45 min
Cast:- Milan Parmar Neha Lakhara Dhruvil Raval
Writer:- Shubhash Shah
Adaptation & Direction:- Jay Dumater

In the world of theatre every move is calculated every word rehearsed—but what happens when the lines between reality and performance begin to blur?

An ambitious director and a passionate actor—bound by love and creativity—invite a third performer into their latest production. Together they craft a gripping drama a play within a play where relationships are tested boundaries are crossed and the script is never truly set in stone. As the scenes unfold personal tensions seep into the performance and what starts as a controlled act spirals into a dangerous game of emotions betrayal and power.

When the hero rewrites his role reality bends to his will. The play takes an unexpected turn and a deadly game begins—one where trust is shattered revenge takes center stage and a single sip could mean the difference between life and death. As the final act approaches the audience is left on the edge of their seats questioning: is this still a performance or has the real game just begun?

In The Game of Moves every player has a strategy. But in the end only one will dictate the final move.

A guided tour of the new exhibition “Shaktirupa: Goddess as Imagined by the Artists”

She nurtures and protects; she provides but can also destroy. Shakti, the divine feminine energy of the Goddess, is both multiform and multifaceted. Across Hindu artistic traditions, artists have interpreted and visualized her various forms from literary texts, oral traditions and popular mythology. Through their creative agency, Shakti comes to life on the painted surface and is transformed by artistic vision and skill.

The exhibition, “Shaktirupa: Goddess as Imagined by the Artists” presents carefully curated paintings and drawings from the Kasturbhai Lalbhai Collection and N C Mehta Collection, alongside folios from the Durga Saptashati manuscript housed at the Lalbhai Dalpatbhai Institute of Indology. Explore these artworks in dialogue with their textual sources and creators, and immerse yourself in the artists’ imagination through excerpts and a multisensory experience.
