Lapsi – A Gujarati Play

Lapsi play is about the ambition of Ek. Zamku and Kanku, a daughter born with mental and physical deformities, are not accepted even by her husband and peers. He is raising his daughter Kanku by doing labor from village to village. When Kanku needs money to send special children to school, knowing that his sister has somehow got money from a nearby hospital, she visits the hospital in the hope of getting money. She is about to become a mother and she is also ready. So daughter Kanku has to be put in school at any cost. According to the condition, Kanku is admitted to school, going to school increases some understanding in Kanku. And the name of the small child in Zamku’s womb is ‘Shiro’ from the surrogate if it is a boy and Lapsi if it is a girl. Zamku gives birth to the Patel couple’s surrogate child but the born child is a special child like Kanku which Hetal is not ready to accept. So Zamku also raises Lapsi like Kanku. After a few years, Zamku comes to the hospital and tells the doctor his second wish. Lapsi also has to be put in a special school like Kanku. Give me another chance. Thus, the play has an emotional depiction of what a mother can do to raise her children.
