It is a romantic comedy that involves a quadruple between the four lovers, the higher authorities fight amongst each other, and the power of magic that leads to a happy ending. The play begins with Theseus, the Duke of Athens winning the war with Amazonians, eventually winning rights over Hippolyta, the Queen of Amazons. Egeus, father of Hermia, asserts his right to Hermia by refusing her choice of love. Hermia, love struck by Lysander, refuses to marry Demetrius, her father’s choice. To which, Theseus gives a deadline of four days to Hermia to make a final decision of her marriage choice. Helena, Hermia’s childhood friend, to her dismay is in love with Demetrius. Therefore, leading to chaos between Helena in love with Demetrius, Demetrius in love with Hermia, Hermia in love with Lysander, and Lysander in love with Hermia. Hermia and Lysander decide to escape the city and run to the forest unveiling the escape to Helena too. Helena reveals the plan to Demetrius, and all the lovers reunite in the forest, where the fairyland resides. In the sub-plot, there is chaos amidst the fairyland too. Oberon, the fairy King, is feeling neglected by Titania, the fairy Queen, because of a changeling boy possessed by Titania. Oberon charms Titania with a magic flower and puts her under a spell where she falls in love with an ass-head. At the same time, Puck, Oberon’s servant, mistakes the lovers and misspells the charm on the boys where Lysander and Demetrius fall in love with Helena. Amidst the magical storm in the forest, peace befalls when Oberon re-establishes the spell by making the lovers fall in love with their righteous lovers. As a Romantic Comedy, Shakespeare ends the play with a happy ending with reunion of all the lovers.
