This seminar is an attempt to push the boundaries of a conversation around queer art and aesthetic beyond the politics of representation.

While representation matters deeply in a society where our desires, bodies and selves are marked and mobilised by Brahminical heteronormative standards, disidentifications (to borrow from Jose Munoz) on the other hand can be a powerful strategy to “negotiate a phobic majoritarian public sphere that continuously elides or punishes the existence of subjects who do not conform…”

What are the politics of art practice that allow a negotiation with identity in a more fragmented, elusive, and transient manner? Can this constitute queer art practice? Or is perhaps thinking through what it means to queer art practice more reflective of the contingent modes of becoming that one associates with queer life.

The panel discussions will bring together practitioners, performers and writers that work with on the interstices of gender, sexuality and identity. The conversation across mediums will bring to fore different imaginations on queer aesthetics and reflect on how one invokes representations of the body and desire in complex ways.
