Samraggi Debroy is a lens based artist who engages with her camera to embalm the vividness of human experience within diverse locales and explore the veiled dialogues between people, their environment and the traditions that weave them together. Initially, her practice was driven by the desire to preserve the past, deeply rooted in her nostalgic temperament, she now strives to pursue the universal values of Beauty and Truth through her visual narratives that emerge from the daily lives of individuals, highlighting the intricate interplay of cultural and environmental elements. Do we hear a painting? Or, smell literature? Or, perhaps see music? There is a possible yes and a definite no as answers to all these questions. The answer impertinently rests in the mind of the artist which reveals itself in their expression. The series Dagarbani Dhrupad is an ongoing project through which she intends to document and archive the visual aesthetics of Ustad Mohi Baha’uddin Dagar’s artistry. He plays the ancient Rudra Veena in the Dagarbani Dhrupad genre which is the oldest living music tradition of India and traces its roots to the SamVed. The only intention of creating this archive is to visually witness Truth and Beauty (as universal ideals) in Dagarbani Dhrupad.
