Painting Everything in the World: An Exhibition on the Books and the Arts By TARA Books Based in Chennai, Tara Books is a collective of writers, designers, and bookmakers, publishing illustrated handmade books for children and adults. In many art traditions in India, painting is an act of thanksgiving, a fulfillment of the artist’s promise to the creator, to paint him or her anew year after year. If artists fail to do this, it is believed, the world will slip into disease and suffering. In a similar spirit, Tara Books offers this exhibition of their books, prints, posters, and short films, featuring indigenous art. It is their tribute to the enduring power of the creative imagination, which has sustained art communities through difficult times. The exhibition features work by artists from across the country. The traditions featured are Mata-ni-pachedi, Pithora, Warli, Gond, Bhil, Mithila, Meena, Patachitra, and Patua. ‘Tara Books: Printing as Co-creation’ by V Geetha, Publisher and Co-Director of Tara Books. V. Geetha is a historian and translator and has been active in the women’s movement for over 3 decades. She has a special interest in pedagogy. Her work at Tara Books includes editing, writing, and working across different aspects of publishing to ensure that Tara’s publishing philosophy remains in focus, in all that they do.
