For many, if not most of us, this work is “work” – a toilsome tedious necessity that must be done in order to survive. However, the Bible encourages us that even the toilsome labor can be satisfying (Ecclesiastes 3:13; Ecclesiastes 5:19) if we have the blessing of God as we walk in His ways. Labor, as again we all know, is not a result of the “fall “Or sin as many belief. Work is a holy, God-ordained activity as we can see in His first command in Genesis 1:28 “Be fruitful and multiply, or my paraphrase: Be productive and then be reproductive…” God declares it so and, by His own example where He worked for 6 days. Adam also engaged in work (Gen 2:17) before his betrayal of God’s command. Indeed, God intends that our labour, while sometimes a grind-it-out experience, be an expression of the marriage between our talents and interests and God’s ordained, productive destiny for our lives. In a fallen world it is often not so. We have enough examples of men and women in the Bible who have taken their worldly labor/work as a means of leveraging their God-given talents to bring Him Glory and Honor. One such person is Daniel who started his career as a young management trainee (at the age of about 18) in Nebuchadnezzar’s kingdom. He went on to serve 4 kings pleasing both God and man doing his duties or key responsibilities diligently. The Bible says in Daniel 6: 3 that because of the exceptional work he was promoted as head of state “Daniel so distinguished himself among the administrators and the satraps by the exceptional qualities that the king planned to set him over the whole kingdom”. In fact, even his colleagues (many of whom were not happy of this promotion of Daniel) tried to find grounds for charges against Daniel in his conduct of government affairs, but they were unable to do so. They could find no corruption in him because he was trustworthy and neither corrupt nor negligent. As we read the first 6 chapters of the book of Daniel, we see many powerful and practical lessons of how Daniel and his companions faced their own challenges ups (promotion and public recognition) and then downs (not just job threat but life threat as well).
