Anandibai Joshi, India’s first female physician, was a trailblazer. In spite of being married to a man twenty years elder to her, who was also a hypocrite showing off his liberal attitude, Anandibai defied the prevailing patriarchal conventions and set sail to America to become the first Indian female MD physician in the year 1886 which was not an ordinary feat. Her achievement paved the way for Indian females to see themselves beyond the household. It freed them from the shackles of restrictions and compulsions. It proved that females can have an identity other than that of a mother, wife, and daughter. That she can be her own being, an individual.

It’s been 150 years since then. Have things really changed? Are Indian women free? Free from the drudgery of the household chores? Is she free to think of her own desires, wishes, and needs? Is she free from her constant need for validation and approval from the men in her life? Yes, there has been progress. In terms of education, careers, lifestyle choices but can we say the same about our attitude and our mindset?

Mowgli Baloo Tanak Tum Tum play was created with the blessings and inspiration of the late legendary Gujarati writer Sri Dhiruben Patel. We dedicate this show and बच्चाparty children`s theatre festival to her.

About Play:

Mowgli Baloo Tanak Tum Tum is a children`s play written and directed by Kabir Thakore. Abandoned after an accident baby Mowgli is taken and raised by a family of wolves. As the boy grows older the wise panther Bagheera realizes he must be returned to his own kind in the nearby city. Bagheera hands over this responsibility to Baloo the bear. On Mowgli and Baloo`s maiden visit to City They meet Kuhoo-the city girl in this musical tale. What happens next is worth watching.
