India, 2050.

In 1905, a writer and social reformer from Bengal published a story in which traditional gender roles were reversed. She created Ladyland, a utopian world run by women, and where all civic duties were managed in a few hours so that citizens could pursue ‘more important things’ – like art, technology and science.
This year Rokeya Sakhawat Hossein’s playful challenge to patriarchal beliefs has been taken up by the students of HST 280 [Dancing Power and Pain: Using Bharat Natyam to Understand Women’s History in India]. Like Rokeya, they have decided to ask: what might India look like 30 years from now (or 31 to be exact)? Is it possible to imagine a future in which women and men are equal in all senses of the word? What kind of values would this society of the future uphold?

Drawing inspiration from their study of a range of 19th and 20th century writers, thinkers and reformers, the students of this course will be presenting their own visions of ideal change in the form of a short choreographed performance followed by a discussion with the audience on Wednesday May 17th 2019.

We invite you to join them for what promises to be an unusual exploration of India’s history of social reform as well as its possible future(s).

About the Participants:
The students of HST 280 will be led by Aparajita Basu, an Assistant Professor at the School of Arts and Sciences at Ahmedabad University.

This event is organised by the Amrut Mody School of Management and the School of Arts and Sciences, Ahmedabad University
