Classical music has a misplaced perception. Much like a delicate antique in a museum, it is often perceived as old and stagnant – reflective of a culture and time long past. This perception of preservation rather than innovation is well justified, with so many performances featuring the same handful of composers and styles from centuries past. But in reality it is a very fast moving ship. Since the turn of the 20th century, classical music in its purest form hasn’t existed, incorporating all forms of cultures and styles into its language – from Jazz, popular music, Folk music and many more. A whole generation of composers concerned with making art music more accessible and relevant have been transforming the field; composing music that has at least one foot in idioms completely novel to classical music. Does the idea of Beatles combined with Japanese music sound intriguing? How about a merging of Balkan and African music? This recital is a brief but wide glimpse into this new direction of music – where old idioms are transformed into contemporary images reflective of our lives today. This project will feature solo and duo works from Cuba, Scotland, Japan, France, Paraguay to name a few; presenting stories, dances, and some unusual expressions one may not expect in music. With a program steeped in humor and lightness, and a bold experimentation of flavors, this concert is not just an opportunity to hear new music by pioneering composers of our time, but rather to experience the limits of what music as a medium of expression can convey… Disclaimer: For those slightly afraid of all things ‘modern’ and ‘contemporary’ – don’t be!
