The official marketplace of walled city of Ahmedabad, Ratan Pol is a perfect example of the city’s character. Ratan Pol is currently a shopping street in the walled city of Ahmedabad (East Ahmedabad). The primary business of the shop owners in this street was that of jewellery and hence the locality was known as Jhaveri Bazaar or Jhaverivad, ‘Jhaveri’ in jarati means jeweller. The primary street connecting the secondary lanes is called Ratan Pol. The primary street is named so because the major business was of diamonds and precious stones. The area is said to be 400 years old and the street facade depicts the Pol architecture of Ahmedabad city. A pol is an area with closely built houses.
