Ahmedabad, November 8, 2019: The British Council in Ahmedabad has been a knowledge center and learning space for students, professionals, and families for many decades. Keeping up with the expectation, British Council – in association with the Reading Agency, UK – has brought the Reading Challenge to India.

Celebrating ‘50 years of humans landing on the moon’ with this year’s theme of Space Chase, this global challenge is based on the principle of encouragement and motivation and inspires children to read for pleasure, thus improving their English, developing their reading skills, and
building their confidence.

The six-week challenge, open to children from the age of 5 to 11 years, will commence from 14 November in Ahmedabad. The Reading Challenge will encourage the participating children to read 6 or more books in 6 weeks from a collection of handpicked titles by the British Council. The British Council will also organize multiple workshops for participants to help them improve reading skills and acquire storytelling and creative writing skills.

Speaking about the Reading Challenge program, Gunjan Narula, Acting Head of British Council Library in Ahmedabad said, “Reading has a lot of benefits, it improves communication skills, helps develop confidence and independence, and has a positive effect in a child’s overall
development. British Council understands the role that reading plays in shaping one’s growth and has, therefore, brought the Reading Challenge program, one of the most popular UK programs, to the city of Ahmedabad in India.”

“With a focus on inspiring learning and creativity, through this program, we hope to bring children closer to the wonderful world of books and inculcate the habit of reading amongst children – making them confident individuals and storytellers as they grow up,” she said.

The Reading Challenge will culminate in a mega award ceremony where winners will be felicitated and awarded certificates. The British Council in Ahmedabad stays true to its promise of creating an unconventional space that is safe and child-friendly. The family members of the library entail a
a lot of benefits, providing an environment that nurtures learning and growth.

Workshop details
1. Writing book reviews: 24 November
2. Describing characters: 1 December
3. Storytelling and writing: 8 December
