This workshop is an adaptation of the teaching methods practiced at the Design Research Lab at the AA School of Architecture in London. Fractals is a hands-on workshop, building upon the design research carried out in previous iterations. Participants work in teams to aggregate discrete 3D units based on algorithms they develop themselves. The focus is on connections and rules of growth at the single-unit level and not on the greater system or aggregation that is resultant of applying the rules.Participants understand the concept of evolution in that one small change or rule at the basic unitary level impacts the holistic system. The rules become a manual to be followed to create larger aggregations, and can be used in the future to replicate the system again. The method is inspired from the organic growth of natural systems, structural systems, mathematics and geometry, and computation, and their application in parametric design and architecture. Fractals 29.0: Gestalt is hosted by the CEPT University Winter School. The workshop will begin with an exploration of material and relationships between basic units through scaleless physical models. Using the fractal as a reference, students will develop basic structural components and a combinatorial logic or “analog algorithms,” such that local interaction between components will produce a global effect. Driven by concerns of depleting resources and dying vernacular crafts, the workshop will use locally-sourced natural materials as representative of real material. The workshop encourages teamwork, design thinking, 3D thinking and logic. The design research will culminate in a public exhibition of the work in CEPT University. Source : Facebook.
