CN Fine Arts Students Take Their 'First Step' Into the Art World

In this exhibition of abstract art at Hutheesing Visual Art Centre, called ‘Kadam – The First Step’, fifth-year students display their work done under the mentorship of artist Bharat Patani.

The first group exhibition of fifth-year students of Sheth C N College Of Fine Arts is aptly named Kadam – The First Step. The 20 students of the institute are exhibiting 60 vivid artworks – a number of ‘non-representational art’ forms – made under the tutelage of artist-professor Bharat Patani. “The students have poured their heart and soul out on canvases, and this exhibition is meant to boost their confidence as solo artists,” Patani shared.

The exhibition was inaugurated on March 3 in the presence of veteran artist Vrindavan Solanki and Mahendra Kadia, with a lamp-lighting ceremony. The Principal of Sheth CN College of Fine Arts, sculptor Ratilal Kansodaria beamed, saying, “The exhibition is an opportunity for these young creators to receive firsthand feedback on their artwork from laymen for the first time. ‘Abstraction’, as a subject, was introduced to the students in their final year, and it has left a profound impression on their ideas.”

Participating artist and student Manmeet Kaur paints an exuberant ‘convergence’ of acrylic colours, while her batchmate Shivani Gosai’s fiery shades of Village are inspired by SH Raza‘s bold aesthetics. Their peer Khushali Chokshi’s Kite Festival painting takes a perisocopic perspective of the sky. Like them, every other student narrates his/her artistic journey gracefully through these paintings.

Established more than a century ago, Sheth CN Vidyalaya is fondly called the ‘Santiniketan of Western India’. One of the state’s oldest academic institutes, it has bestowed the country with luminary personalities like poet Rajesh Vyas, physicist Vikram Sarabhai, actor Malhar Thakar and various other achievers. The faculty of Fine Arts, established in the same precincts is responsible to nurture a generation of artists that Ahmedabad is proud of today.

The exhibition is open at the Hutheesing Visual Art Centre till March 7, 2018, from 4pm to 8 pm.
