This Sharad Purnima night, you don’t have to brave loudspeakers with Bollywood mash-ups of Garba, or blinding halogen lights. Experience Garba in the glow of thousands of clay lamps, under the pure moonlight. Get invites for the Smart Garbotsav and sway to tunes sung by Aditya Gadhvi, current folk sensation from Gujarat.
Mythology suggests that Goddess Lakshmi walks around the world to observe the actions of human beings on the full moon night of Sharad Purnima. People in the olden days celebrated this auspicious occasion by dancing to folk songs. The only light that lit up their celebration was the bright moonlight and the dim illumination of diyas. The Sharad Purnima marks the culmination of Navratri and is an astrologically prosperous day. It also marks the beginning of Autumn (Sharad) in the northern hemisphere. It’s also the last day for revelers to dance to the tunes of Raas and Garba, the traditional folk dances of Gujarat. So it’s a special night indeed!
In an earlier era, clay lamps were the primary source of light and decoration for these traditional festivities. To recreate such an ethereal ambience and celebrate the Sharad Purnima in a more traditional way, Smart Garbotsav has decided to switch off the lights for about half an hour during its Garba night on October 24. In this show organised by Smart Graph Art Advertising Pvt. Ltd, revelers will groove only in the glow of thousands of clay diyas, under the moonlight. Surreal, right?
To add to this dreamlike scenario, there will be folk tunes by popular folk singer Aditya Gadhvi who will be performing live. Gadhvi has earned the love of Gujarat’s youth with his textured voice blending the soul of folk with the energy of pop. He is currently trending for his powerful rendition of recent hit number Pankhi Re from upcoming Gujarati film Sharato Lagu. Aditya Gadhvi is the son of illustrious daayro performer Yogesh Gadhvi who is also the former Chairperson of Gujarat Sangeet Natak Akademi.
The Smart Garbotsav has been an annual affair since 2009, with singers like Shyamal Saumil, Sanjay Oza, Parth Oza and Aishwarya Majumdar having graced its stage in earlier editions. The seventh edition of the Sharad Purnima celebration is an invitee-only affair.
Let’s make Garba traditional again!
The celebration will be held on October 24 at Vrundavan Party Plot on Sindhu Bhavan Road. Garba lovers can get invites for the show by visiting Shwetrang Khizamat at
