Abir First Take : the Art Competition is Here With its 2nd Edition!

Ruby Jagrut, renowned for her work in natural dye medium, initiated a one of its kind arts encouragement initiative – Abir First Take – which in its first edition itself generated immense value for the participants and the art fraternity as a whole. Abir First Take is an Art Competition, which invites entries from all across India, with an objective to showcase works of budding artists to larger group of collectors and to enhance their artistic journeys by providing linkages with master artists. The first edition culminated in a display of 108 art works that came from 48 cities and was spread over two galleries i.e Kanoria Gallery of Arts and Hutheesing Centre in Ahmedabad. Abir is a charitable organisation that is motivated to bring a positive change in the condition of the upcoming visual artists of India.

Abir First Take, announces its second edition, to be held at the same venues between September 9 – 16, 2017. The authorities will receive entries until May 30, 2017, and participation is open to artists from across India. The competition includes 6 awards across 3 different categories, and the winner would be rewarded with a handsome cash prize of Rs. 1,00,000/- and the runner-up with Rs. 50,000/- .

Ruby Jagrut shares her enthusiasm saying “Abir First Take has matured into a tested platform, fostering art talk in a manner the city of Ahmedabad has never seen. Our maiden edition last year saw a mindboggling response. It collated creativity from across the country. While we have conceptualized First Take in the form of a contest between diverse art forms and their creators, the moot objective is not restricted to a competition. The ultimate motive is celebration of colors and art and providing apt hand-holding to those who stumble along the way. In 2017, the response so far has been invigorating”

Abir First Take gives lot of prominence to the jury. The panel of jury for 2017 edition is highlighted by New Delhi based culture critic, curator and art writer Johnny ML. The panel is further enhanced by contemporary painter Manu Parekh, folk art specialist Madhvi Parekh and sculptor and print maker Walter D’Souza. It is a fantastic jury, and the curation is expected to be an eclectic mix of traditional as well as non-conformist art.

The initial response they have received is promising – more than 175 admissions from 43 cities – already received. Abir First Take is a significant event, that has the potential to galvanize the scattered young talent in India, into a cohesive and visible contemporary art force.
