Folk Singer Yogesh Gadhvi bags the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award

Yogesh Gadhvi, the renowned folk artist of Gujarat, who has dedicated all his lifetime in uplifting the Gujarati art culture through reciting verses and enlivened the art of traditional daayro at various national and international platforms has been recently honoured with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award 2016.

His tremendous contribution to the Traditional Folk Tribal Music of Gujarat defines his excellence. From an early age of 4, he found inspiration from the work of his grandfather Shivdanji Gadhavi , a popular folk artist himself. His grandfather who was a Muli poet died before Gadhavi’s birth, but Gadhvi’s musical gathering consists maximum of his work. The 48-year young folk artist has been the former Chairman of Gujarat Rajya Sangeet Natak Akademi .

Sangeet Natak Akademi Award accolade is the supreme honour given to any performance artist in India by India’s National Academy of Music, Dance & Drama since 1952. It is bestowed by the President of India and Gadhvi is the only Gujarati artist to receive this honour in past nine years. The award is delegated in 43 different categories, with a cash prize of Rs. 1 Lakh and Tamra Patra and Angvastram.
