Though Hurricane Michael might be on its way to Charlotte, it seems unlikely to dampen the spirit of the city’s creative denizens. There’s an abundance of creative events to look out for this week and the next. Wrap your week up this Friday with a musical concert by The Choir School at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. Or relive composer Leonard Bernstein’s famous soundtrack from the musical West Side Story with senior pianist Charles Craig and his trio.

Culture lovers can celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month by attending a Latin poetry recital and dance performance by the Alma de la Luna dance academy. If you’re in the mood for more performing arts, watch the innocent play of a poor girl who claims to have a ‘Hundred Dresses’ in her wardrobe. Or catch the thrilling play Death Trap, which revolves around a playwright who runs short of creative ideas and devises a ploy to procure one.

Moviegoers can look forward to attending the screening of the 2017 drama film The Children Act, while book lovers can enjoy food with people from the world of literature at the 9th Annual Bibliofeast. Foodies of Charlotte can also relish world cuisines at the Taste of the World International Food Festival, while local art lovers can bring their families along to attend Open Studio Saturday to meet the artists-in-residence and make some art alongside them.

American historian Burl Noggle is the inspiration for our 70th Charlotte Art Weekly. Noggle was the senior professor at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Born in Rutherford County, NC, Noggle completed his studies from Duke University. The historian published 4 popular books of history, including Teapot Dome, a book on the oil and politics scandal of the USA. His method of teaching U.S. history was unconventional and he drew on works of popular culture and fiction, including film, photography and popular music, to do so. He was considered a Distinguished Alumni Professor at LSU for his achievements in teaching.

The Choir School’s 25th Anniversary Concert

Artists Christina Pier, Kelsey Harrison, Ryan Headley and Peter DeVries will be featured in this special celebration of music with The Choir School.
