The highest grossing Broadway musical ‘The Lion King’ comes to Charlotte! As does Broadway’s first all-black, all-female cast and crew of the play ‘Eclipsed’. Find out more in Charlotte Art Weekly #62.
Kids and adults alike are in for a treat this week in Charlotte! The highest-grossing Broadway musical The Lion King, known for its stunning performances, is coming to town. Also in line is a play aimed at toddlers, about the curious friendship between a Lion and a Little Red Bird. There’s also picnic time in Wing Haven’s Children’s Garden for kids to get their hands dirty in nature.
Music enthusiasts of Charlotte also have a lot to look forward to this week, with two tribute concerts set to play covers of the much-loved bands The Beatles and Rush. For those looking to listen to something fresh and alternative, an evening of soulful piano-pop by Nathan Angelo is for you.
Art-lovers, if you’ve not yet had a chance to see Sam Van Aken’s nature-based art, you can still see it before it closes next week. Or if drama is your genre, then watch a survival story of 5 Liberian women, situated in the midst of a Civil War, in the play Eclipsed. It’s the first Broadway play to star an all-black, all-female cast and crew.
This week’s inspiration for our Charlotte Art Weekly is American actor, comedian, television/radio personality and jazz enthusiast Milton Supman. He was better known as Soupy Sales because of his performance in the children’s television show Lunch with Soupy Sales. According to an on-air statement, the master of slapstick and improv comedy received almost 25,000 pies on his face on air. Born in 1926 in Franklinton, NC, Sales was a famous radio personality in New York and was a frequent panelist on What’s My Line?, the longest running US television game show.
