London’s National Theatre (NT) known for their breakthrough productions has announced a new initiative ‘National Theatre at Home’ which provides access to some of their most iconic plays to audiences, across the globe, for free!
Since April 2, NT is streaming one play every Thursday at 7 pm BST (11:30 pm IST) on their official YouTube channel, starting with One Man Two Guvnors featuring James Corden. Starting on April 16, is the stage version of Robert Louis Stevenson’s iconic adventure novel Treasure Island, adapted by Bryony Lavery.
“Our ambition at the NT is to create work which is challenging, entertaining and inspiring and we’re committed to continuing that through these difficult times. I’m thrilled that we’re able to fulfil this ambition in a different way through our collaboration with YouTube”, said Lisa Burger, Executive Director and Joint Chief Executive of National Theatre explaining this initiative, to KentOnline. “We have delved into the National Theatre Live archive and curated a programme that’s varied from comedy to new dramas to classics so there is something for everyone to enjoy rom their own homes”, she added.

The Shakespeare’s Globe, the successor of the 400 year old Globe Theatre, for which William Shakespeare wrote plays, is providing people with six of their iconic productions on their YouTube channel. Watch Hamlet (2018), Romeo & Juliet (2009), A Midsummer Night’s Dream (2013), The Winter’s Tale (2018), The Two Noble Kinsmen (2018) and The Merry Wives of Windsor (2019) from your home screen. For an institution like Globe, and for the quality they have been serving since centuries, these are difficult times. So while they are opening their hearts to entertain us, theatre lovers should come forward and contribute to their voluntary donations appeal.
To celebrate the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death, they will also broadcast 37 Complete Walk short films for free.
Andrew Lloyd Webber is a world renowned composer and impresario of musical theatre who gave us productions like Cats, Phantom of the Opera and Jesus Christ Superstar. The Phantom of the Opera is one of longest running musical shows ever in the history and is watched by over 130 million people. Webber decides to give his fans a curated online experience of his famous musicals. Collaborating with Universal in their initiative of ‘The Shows Must Go On’, Webber will be releasing a different production, every Friday at 11:00 am PT (11:30 pm IST) on the channel by the same name and each new premier will be available for 48 hours.
“We’re starting off with Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and sometime buried in the schedule, later on, the most important one, my disaster musical By Jeeves and I’m very very fond of it and [you will be too]”, said the composer to inews.
