Ahmedabad has always been a melting pot of various cultures and ideas. From the time of founder Sultan Ahmed Shah to today, the city has undergone many changes. It is understandably taking steps to change and adapt to the modern times. This long and fruitful process of building infrastructure to benefit the citizens is an ongoing one, but even through this, the city’s deep and intersectional history remains at the forefront, evidenced by the UNESCO World Heritage tag awarded to the city in 2017. Ahmedabad’s traditions and relationships have held strong throughout its 608-year-old history and the resulting city is a fascinating mix of new and old, of abstract and traditional.

Today, in honour of the city’s 608th birthday, Creative Yatra’s correspondent Meera Desai takes you through just a fraction of the heritage sites that exist in the city. We begin at the 600 year old Bhadra Fort, 600-year-old from there. We will cover the amazing web of the Ahmedabad specific residential style, ‘pols, the famous Jumma Mosque, the Kalupur Swaminarayan Temple with its beautiful Burmese teak wood, the Ahmed Shah Mosque, and the infamous Lucky Tea Stall, the tea shop inside a cemetery where Amdavadis take a stop to relax and enjoy a cutting chai.
