New York Indian Film Festival showcases Wrong Side Raju and Sameer

The Indian films have always been appreciated in foreign countries and instances like NYIFF, where they showcase movies of Indian filmmakers gives the NRI audience an opportunity to reconnect with their roots and the international spectators a chance to connect with our culture and traditions. New York Indian Film Festival, a seven day gala, is among the oldest and prestigious film festivals in this space and its aim is to add to the cultural diversity of New York, by way of showcasing films from  Indian Subcontinent. The NYIFF selects Full Length Features, Documentaries as well as shorts which are viewed by a mix of Indian and North American audience. The Films advisory board is an envious list of credible and influential names, which are, Salman Rushdie, Shashi Tharoor, Mira Nair, Shabana Azmi, Deepa Mehta, Shyam Benegal, Mani Ratnam, Madhur Jaffrey, Sabrina Dhawan, Sakina Jaffrey.

NYIFF’s 2017 edition came to a closure on May 7th, and we are writing about it here, as this year has a special significance for Ahmedabad. Two films that have came out from film makers of the city, are being selected in the official line up of the festival. First one being, Mikhil Musale’s National Award Winning film Wrong Side Raju and second one being Dakshinkumar Bajrange’s, yet unreleased hindi thriller, Sameer. Wrong Side Raju is a twisted tale of a hit and run case, with interludes of humour and romance, and it is among the most popular releases of Gujarati Cinema in 2016. On the other hand, Sameer is a thriller that explores the theme of mistaken identity, in the context of a terror laden circumstance. Sameer got its World Premier at the NYIFF, and is expected to hit Indian screen in end of July. Both films are made by debutantes who are based out of Ahmedabad, and it is of tremendous significance that these films are being showcased at NYIFF 2017. Some of the other important Indian films at the festival this year are Vikramaditya Motwane’s Trapped (Hindi), Rahul Bose’s Poorna (Hindi) and Sarthak Bhasin’s Sakharam (Marathi).

Sameer is also the official selection for the CreativeYatra.com promoted Charlotte Asian Film Festival and will be showcased on May 27th at UNC Charlotte Centre City, North Carolina, USA.
