Contemporary art from India is gradually gaining a worldwide reputation that has helped strengthen its audience. The Indian art is receiving lot of corporate patronage, that is further helping the cause. One of the person who has been putting her weight behind this is Nita Ambani, philanthropist, chairperson and founder of Reliance Foundation, who was elected as the Honorary Trustee of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City, yesterday. She is the first Indian in the Museum’s history of about 150 years gain this position.
On honouring Ambani, Daniel Brodsky, the Chairman of the Museum, said:
“Mrs Ambani’s commitment to The Met (Metropolitan Museum of Art) and to preserving and promoting India’s art and culture is truly exceptional. Her support has an enormous impact on the museum’s ability to study and display art from every corner of the world. It is a pleasure to welcome Nita Ambani to the Board.”
Along with her husband, Mukesh Ambani, the Chairman of Reliance Industries Ltd. and the richest man of Asia, The Reliance Foundation has given their constant support to The Met since 2016. Ambani family’s collaboration with Met started with an exhibition of drawings of the modernist artist Nasreen Mohamedi, which became the first retrospective event for the artist’s work in the United States.
The Foundation also provided The Met with a generous gift in 2017 which provided for various exhibitions, like the Oct 2017’s exhibit of Modernism on the Ganges: Raghubir Singh Photographs and the June 2017’s exhibit of Phenomenal Nature: Mrinalini Mukherjee. Mukesh and Nita Ambani’s generosity towards the museum also earned them the title of the “Great Champions of The Met”.
The Reliance Foundation for the past couple of years has been constantly aiming to provide a platform for Indian art which can earn it global recognition. They are committed to preserve and promote India’s art, culture and heritage.
With this newly declared alliance, visual art from India will receive more opportunities to be displayed at an iconic institution which has given a major impetus to art from all across the world for over a century.
