Nirakhne Gaganma

‘તે જ હું’ ‘તે જ હું’ શબ્દ બોલે;

અનંત ઓચ્છવમાં પંથ ભૂલી;

હેમની કોર જ્યાં નીસરે તોલે;

અચળ ઝળકે સદા વિમળ દીવો;

અરધ-ઊરધની મધ્યે મહાલે;

Interpretation by Shri Tushar Shukla (In Gujarati)

અનંતરાય રાવળે નરસિંહ મહેતાને – The Beautiful, the Grand and the Sublime – ના કવિ કહ્યા છે.

English Paraphrase by Mihir Gajrawala (Based on the Interpretation by Shri Tushar Shukla)

You must have read this verse from Narsinh

Akhil brahmand ma ek tu shri hari, jujve rupe anant bhaase.

In this verse, Narsinh reinstates the same philosophy that we discussed last week, every particle of universe is a subset of the ultimate consciousness (Parmatma). He clarifies this perception further with these simple examples. The soul in the body, the light in the elements, the sound in emptiness, the air, the water, the earth, the seed in a tree..it is all a manifestation of the ultimate consciousness. The potential of a seed to become a tree, this possibility is also a proof of the existence manifesting itself. At the end of the day it is the eye of the beholder that is able to perceive this reality. If one truly sees, the difference between creation and creator will disappear. That the creation and the creator are different is a misconception, largely due to contamination of the scriptures. And here Narsinh makes it clear that ‘one may be a devotee to what one may like’. In this thought there is no possibility of any intolerance to survive. Infact the poet believes that ‘it is love, that shall awaken the consciousness’

Narsinh is someone who has comprehended ‘that is you’, in this verse he delightfully exclaims, ‘that is me’. It seems as if the existence itself has expressed itself within the mind of the ultimate devotee. Just like Arjun was made witness to the grandeur and limitless magnitude of the existence, as described in Gita, it seems Narsinh too was fortunate to have been able to perceive this grandeur. It is in the blissfullness of this experience that he sings ‘Nirakh ne gagan ma kaun ghumi rahyo, tej hu, tej hu, shabda bole’ / Look who is wandering in the skies, that is me, that is me, the words speak – this song is not about his pride, but an acknowledgement of the possibility that a true devotee can comprehend the nature of reality. And the one who has become aware, it is natural for him to desire, ‘shyam na charan me ichhu hu maran re / i wish to die at the feet of Shyam (the LORD) ‘

The verse also depicts the mental state of the one who has perceived the ultimate. The poet says that it is impossible to describe the bliss of this experience in words. However the poet has attempted to do that using the technique of ‘Avalvani’ (Language of Paradox)

To see without eyes, to comprehend the formless and to taste without tongue – the ultimate reality can can be experienced through love and devotion ‘premna tant ma sant zaale’

This poem, which beautifully describes the path to ultimate, through pure devotion, finds place among some of the best works in gujarati literature. It is not without reason that eminent critic Late Shri Anantray Raval described Narsinh Mehta as – The beautiful, the Grand and the Sublime.
