India’s largest art fair, India Art Fair 2019, reveals this year’s line-up, with artists like Ai Weiwei, Bharti Kher and Arpita Singh. The 4-day fair opens on January 31 and offers a window into the contemporary and modern arts of South Asia and beyond.
The capital city of India is all set to become a hub of visual arts starting January 31 as India’s largest art fair arrives in Delhi. The 11th India Art Fair brings with it 75 globally celebrated participants, some of whom will be presenting for the very first time in India. Artists, curators, gallerists and art enthusiasts have ritually flocked to this annual fair since more than a decade. With massive footfalls witnessed every year, India Art Fair is the largest such fair of contemporary and modern Indian art in the world. Previously, the fair has also hosted works by Pablo Picasso and brought diaspora artist Anish Kapoor’s sculptures for the first time to India. It’s no wonder that IAF is one of the most anticipated art fairs in the world.
The highlight of this 4-day-long extravaganza, which culminates on February 3, will be the multi-dimensional nature of the contemporary and modern arts of South Asia. Besides this focus, there will also be a host of international works on display by such renowned artists as the artist-activist Ai Weiwei, artist Olafur Eliasson who is known for playing with space and light, and Turner Prize-winning photographer Wolfgang Tillmans. From India, established artists like the Padma Bhushan awardee Arpita Singh, contemporary artist Bharti Kher and Bangladeshi multimedia artist Tayeba Begum Lipi will be presenting their works this year.
Taking place in the NSIC Exhibition Grounds in Okhla, the 11th IAF will focus on the changing face of art. The creative fiesta has been segregated into various sections. The Focus section will feature solo artist presentations curated by institutions and galleries, while the Art Projects section will be full of original installations, conceptual sculptures and video installations. The Platform section will feature emerging art practices, and the Forum section will host performances and discussions to celebrate critical experimentations in art.
In an article in Architectural Digest, the Fair Director Jagdip Jagpal says, “I had less than five months to prepare for the 2018 edition. This time, I’ve had a full calendar year to learn, adapt and shape the fair, but there’s so much to do and so many ideas, that our main challenge is fitting it all into a four-day event!” This year, exhibitions will also be set up in various venues across the city through a Parallel programme, which will also allow visitors to experience Delhi and its many cultural offerings.
Besides the DAG art collection, a time-honoured gallery participant of IAF, various other established art institutions will also be part of the line-up of this year, like Chatterjee & Lal, Nature Morte and Dhoomimal. International gallery members like David Zwirner Gallery and Aicon Gallery of New York, Sokyo Gallery of Kyoto and Neugerriemschneider of Berlin are also participating this year.
India Art Fair has always stunned visitors with its exquisite spread of art. Book your entry tickets for the 2019 edition now.
