International Kite Festival 2019 - Uttarayan fever begins in Ahmedabad

The skies of Ahmedabad goes kaleidoscopic amidst vivid, and innovatively shaped kites as India’s first World heritage city starts celebrating its most favourite festival Uttarayan/Makar Sankranti at the Sabarmati Riverfront.

Kite enthusiasts from more than 45 countries and 13 different states of India are participating in the year’s grandest kite-flying celebration. The International Kite Festival is now not just celebrated in Ahmedabad but in various cities of Gujarat and It is said that the kite spree is soon going to extend to the Statue of Unity in Kevadia. For nine days audience can expect a scenery full of Brazilian, Chinese, Cambodian, Ukrainian, Australian, and Belgian kite enthusiasts looking up in the sky while holding their unique reel of thread, which is attached to the up high flying tiger, dragon and various other creatively shaped kites.

Initiated in 1989 as a celebration, the time-honoured International Kite festival has now become a part of Ahmedabad’s culture and a quintessential tourist attraction. The celebration began on January 6, 2019, and the festival will remain open until the sun goes down on January 14, 2019. The festival takes place at Sabarmati Riverfront, behind the NID campus in Paldi area of Ahmedabad. The kite festival has now become an identity of the city.
