He was the 17th Chief Justice of India and is known for his notable contributions towards judicial activism in India. He introduced the concepts of public interest litigation – which has been an important instrument for social activism across the country. He was also the Chairman of the United Nations Human Rights Committee from 2001-03. His accomplishments and contributions to the judiciary system earned him a Padma Vibhushan for public affairs in 2007.
