Daughter of illustrious parents – Ramanbhai Nilkanth and Vidyagauri Nilkanth, educationist Sarojini Mehta, followed her lineage to serve as a social reformist and writer in Ahmedabad. Mehta, the inspiration for our 210th Ahmedabad Art Weekly, after graduating in 1919 and learning sociology from the London School of Economics in 1923, worked as a superintendent at the Vanita Vishram. Her stirring short story anthologies namely Ekadashi, Char Patharani Ma and Valata Pani raised pertinent questions on subjects like child marriage, family and the stature of women in society. Mehta is revered as a gem in the Gujarati literary fraternity.
