The reason for his presence his masterful creations of epic proportions to document the life and message of the Father of the Nation. Jhaveri, a filmmaker, a photographer and a writer, closely stayed with the Mahatma from 1930 (Dandi March) untill Gandhi breathed his last in 1948. Over this duration of 18 years he has documented numerous moments of Gandhi’s life, which today are a major part of the human history. A lot of pictures that we see of Gandhi are through the lens of Vithalbhai Jhaveri. The photographs have been exhibited across the globe and are used extensively in Peter Ruhe’s photo biography on Gandhi titled ‘Gandhi – A photo biography’. His greatest contribution to the history and creative fraternity is the 330-minute documentary on Gandhi, Mahatma: Life of Gandhi, 1869–1948. The documentary film is among the longest films made in India and it covers Gandhi’s life through 14 chapters. He was honoured with the Padma Bhushan in 1969.
