Our 122nd edition is featuring renowned Gujarati poet, playwright and essayist Manishankar Ratnji Bhat famously recalled as Kavi Kant in the literary world. Born in the princely state of Baroda in 1867 his inclination towards philosophy and academics were highly influenced by his family values. He has served as the professor and then as a Vice Principal at Kalabhavan, Vadodara after his Bachelor of Arts from Bombay University. He later invented a new genre of narrative poetry called as ‘Khand-Kavya’ and drafted some noteworthy works including Purvalap, and some evergreen lyrics including the Sagar Ane Shashi. Contemporary dramatists of Gujarat still reminisce his plays like Salimshah Athva Ashrumati, Roman-Swarajya, Dukhi Sansar and Guru Govind Singh.
