Canada 150 Celebration: Vancouver Walls Paved with Colours and Cultural Murals by Artists
Canada celebrates sesquicentennial anniversary of its establishment through cultural initiatives during it Canada 150 commemoration in 2017. The 150 Alliance, formed by the Canadian government has made a joint effort with various associations for grandeur events.
National Mural Project is one such annual initiative where around 100,000 individuals collaborative will develop more than 150 murals across Canada to celebrate the occasion. This week in Vancouver, BC, a series of 4 paintings out of 6 pre-decided public art murals were inaugurated in honour of Vancouver’s Canada 150 celebration. All the artworks showcase the beauty of multiculturalism.
Artist Kelly Cannell has made Sea to Sky, light box artwork and Jay Havens designed the Heartbeat themed on the speech of Chief Dan George and the 1978 mural of Daphne Odjig, The Indian in Transition. Ryan McKenna’s artwork on Time Immemorial showcases Aboriginal people whereas Haisla Collins, Jerry Whitehead, Sharifah Marsden, Mehren Razmpoosh, Richard Shorty and Vanessa Walterson’s Spirit of the Realms is made to honour the Indigenous cultures and the First Nation People stories of Canada. The masterworks are displayed at Queen Elizabeth Theatre Plaza, Vancouver Public Library, and at 600 Beatty St respectively.
