The Official Ceremony : Ahmedabad Receives the Certificate of ‘World Heritage City’

After July 8, 2017, when UNESCO mentioned Ahmedabad amongst the 250 heritage cities in the world, September 1, 2017, is now been noted as the momentous date in the History of Gujarat. As on this day, the historic city of Ahmedabad received its official title of the ‘World Heritage City’. The official certificate hand over ceremony witnessed the presence of Chief Minister of Gujarat Vijay Rupani, Director General of UNESCO Irina Bokova, Mayor of Ahmedabad Gautam Shah, Additional Secretary Ministry of Culture Sujata Prasad, UNESCO representative of India Shigeru Aoyagi, noted architects, historians, and prominent politicians at the Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Auditorium, Bodakdev. Ms. Irina Bokova did the honours of handing over the certificate to Chief Minister Shri Vijay Rupani. The CM addressed the event by calling it “A proud moment for 6.5 crore people of Gujarat.”

UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova visited the AD 1411 built Citadel of Bhadra to understand how small and medium scale businesses around the Bhadra Kali deity made the Walled City of Ahmedabad the commercial hub of Gujarat and also felt awestruck after experiencing the AD 1573 built Sidi Saiyyed Mosque and its intricately designed ‘Tree of Life’ on Friday morning before the ceremony. The UNESCO chief will be visiting the AD 1027 built Sun Temple of Modhera and the 11th-century old Ran Ki Vav in Patan before flying back to Delhi.
