Ed Sheeran’s ‘Sapphire’—A Cross-Cultural Melody With a Desi Twist

An English song with a Punjabi hook-line has caught the attention of Indian audiences, thanks to ‘Sapphire,’ the latest release from English singer-songwriter and global pop icon Ed Sheeran. Filmed in India using guerrilla-style technique, the Sapphire by Ed Sheeran features popular Indian playback singer Arijit Singh and a special appearance by Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan.

‘Sapphire’ is the third single from Sheeran’s upcoming album ‘Play,’ which is set to release on September 12, 2025. Released on June 5, the song has been described by fans as “a fresh glass of water after a long walk,” a sentiment echoed by its vibrant visuals and cultural depth.

In Sapphire’s music video, viewers see Shah Rukh Khan joyfully singing alongside Sheeran and riding a scooter with Arijit Singh through Indian streets. The visuals offer a striking snapshot of India’s rich culture. Sheeran is seen traveling in an auto, sipping chai at a local cafe, interacting with locals in bustling markets, bonding with young football players, and standing by the Hooghly River. 

The comment section below the video was buzzing as viewers eagerly spotted details, from Ed Sheeran riding Shillong’s iconic bus to glimpses of a neighborhood cafe and flower wall art. Every frame drew people in, making the visuals all the more immersive.

The anticipation for “Sapphire” began building months ago when Sheeran teased snippets and teasers on his social media platforms. His inclusion of Punjabi lyrics, particularly the line “Cham Cham Chamke Sitare Warge,” sung in his voice, has delighted Indian fans and added to the song’s appeal.

Ed Sheeran described the creation of the song in an Instagram post, saying, “‘Sapphire’ was the first song I finished for ‘Play’ that made me know where the album was heading. It’s why I finished the recording process in Goa, surrounded by some of the best musicians in India.”

“Sapphire” follows two earlier singles from the album: ‘Old Phone’ and ‘Azizame,’ the latter of which also embraces a cross-cultural theme, incorporating Persian influences.

Further exciting fans, Sheeran announced that he and Arijit Singh have recorded a full Punjabi version of the song, which is expected to be released in the coming weeks. He added: “The final jigsaw piece for me was getting @arijitsingh on the record… It was a journey to get there and such an amazing day of music and family. Me and him have done a full Punjabi version of the song that will come out soon. This is the album version — and it’s my favourite song on the album.”

With its fusion of Western pop and South Asian culture, “Sapphire” is quickly finding its place in listeners’ hearts and their summer playlists.
