The inspiration for our 142 AAW is celebrated Mumbai based artist Hema Upadhyay. Born in the cultural city of Vadodara, Upadhyay’s work became identifiable due to repeated use of small-collaged photographic self-portraits. She was invited for art residencies in countries like Sydney, Pakistan, USA, Singapore and France. Her work where she showcased consequences of war through cockroaches as a museum installation is quite appreciated. Her other remarkable solo-installations include Indian Highway; Where the bees suck, there suck; Think left, think right, think low, think tight; and Mu-mmy . She was the only Indian to be invited for the reopening of MACRO museum in Rome. Her demise at a young age of 43 is an unfortunate reality for the art fraternity at large.
