AAW #109

It’s mid of may which is also synonymous as one of the hottest period of the year in this city, but still, nothing will stop you from attending these enriching events featuring within the 109th edition of Ahmedabad Art Weekly. The curated list provides you with an array of creativity distributed in the genres of visual art exhibitions, poetry recitals, stand-up comedy, open mics, photography exhibition, music concerts, and theatrical performances. These sort of happenings within the city makes us realise that it’s not just the monuments and heritage structures or the modern infrastructure that is the pride of the city but its people, who have built them.

This week’s AAW is dedicated to the Padma Bhushan honoured musicologist and music writer from Surat, Ramanlal C Mehta. He had a unique style of contributing to Hindustani classical music through Khayal and Thumri format of singing. He was a modernist musician, who had also composed and produced more than 50 musical plays, which were later broadcasted on All India Radio. He was the principal of the College of Indian Music, Dance & Dramatics / faculty of performing arts at MSU Baroda, for many years. A honorary doctorate Mehta was the founder of the Indian Musicological Society, he also wrote for journals and contributed as a critic on the subject. He will be thoroughly remembered for his contribution towards the Hindustani classical sangeet.
